Project Brief – Donated specialised digital tools and equipment to girls to make them self-reliant and sufficient for higher studies. Background NFBM’s Jagriti School for Blind Girls at Alandi serves and educates mostly rural blind girls. It has hostel as well as schools. Apart from educating these girls while they study at school, Jagriti tries to do overall development of girls and prepares them to become independent and ready for their future studies and career. Digital and Education is key part of that, Problem: 1) Not everything is in Braille. There are reference books, study material, extra-curricular things, which are now available in digital format 2) Taking notes during lecture is impossible for many blind girls 3) Reading, studying on notes of others is difficult. Everything needs to be remembered or study what is available in Braille only. 4) This puts tremendous limitations on their learning scope, progress, marks they get in exam even if they are intelligent and can study. Solution: 1) Donation of Smart multi-function device, software on laptop and Smart Cane 2) Pristine donated special devices (hand held + Laptops) that can record lectures, has USB interface, so can copy it on laptop or computers they have, and listen whenever want 3) Device can read out PDF and HTML files in audio format. So one can listen the books, study material etc 4) Sensor and advanced technology based latest Smart Cane helps them move around, vibrations tell where obstacle is, where there is ditch and traffic etc. so they can far more safely and comfortable move around, use public transport, go to college / school etc. Benefits: 1) Can listen lectures and audio notes again and again (as revision) and whenever convenient 2) Can listen to books and web material which is otherwise not available in Braille. Can download and do revision of reference materials and guides 3) Support in commute and movement. No need to touch or bang on male/boys. Vehicular accident risk reduced while on road 4) Over 100 blind girls benefitted from these two phase project (Aug and May) 5) Extensive use of IT and Digital Technology to Overcome Physical Challenge
